Pond Reflections

The past week was lots of fun producing Pond Reflections, a 16 x 20 oil painting on Ampersand Gessobord.

I started with a simple wash of colors.  Yes, I said wash (not stain) since I use Hobein's Duo Water Soluble Oil paints.  Love them!

The whole approach to this painting was to concentrate on the elements of design with a focus on value contrast and line.

I then started blocking in the values.  The dark values were developed using purple, green, and dark blue.  The warm brown tones were created by combining the complimentary colors, yellow and purple.  I find this a much more luminous approach to color rather than relying on tube browns and neutrals.

Once the shapes were in, it was time to start focusing on the lines, and more lines, and more lines, varying the values, the colors, the intensity etc.  It was playful slashing the the brush randomly across the surface trying to achieve the chaos of the growth around the pond.

ACT 2016

The new year has arrived and I look forward to all that is new and fresh.  But things evolve well beyond me.  I am awed by all the artists that have contributed to ACT, Artists Changing Tomorrow.  I developed this fundraiser several years ago and hundreds of artists have given, raising to date over $150,000 for the arts.

This year ACT will be held on February 27th.  Lots of wonderful art has been created and will be auctioned at the event.  View the works at www.act4art.com.  I applaud all those artists who have given so generously.  Funds go to support art education and arts community outreach.

Below are a few teasers, examples of the wonderful artwork to be seen.
